CONTEMPORARY: Guy Denning
GUY DENNING DRAWINGS
Guy Denning (b 1965) is an English contemporary artist and painter based in France. He is the founder of the Neomodern group and a member of Stuckism International.
Working initially from screen-shots from a small section of the 1928 film La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc Guy made numerous preliminary sketches from which he produced these larger finished drawings.
"This work is about losing faith; specifically the loss of faith in the body politic to work beyond agendas of party, power, country or personal gain. Its subjects are those moments in recent history when the ordinary and the sane among us sit back and despair of the twisted, sick ends woven by ‘respectable’ political means. Those moments when the realists and idealists alike think ‘What have we become... why are you doing this in our name?’ This loss is brought into focus by a specific political outrage or scandal (the title) and related to the personal through my inspiration derived from Dreyer's film and Renée Jeanne Falconetti’s portrayal of Joan of Arc" Guy Denning
