Michael Chia
Michael Chia was born in Singapore. He presently lives in Brussels, Belgium. His adventure into photography began with a gift from his mother, a simple Kodak point and shoot camera when he was about 12 years old.
During the nights, he would point it to space and photographed the stars. He was disappointed with the results. They were obviously underexposed. Later he would realise that the camera does not capture what the eye sees. Then on to discover that it could freeze a moment in space, in time. And his first steps into realising that imagination could be captured with the art of photography.
For Chia, the challenge is to capture an emotion and transfer it onto paper. Although he works with digital, his favourite medium is still the traditional black and white film. He has more than 25 years of photography experience and still travels regularly all over the world.
The Dreams in Dreamland series provides an unorthodox way of photographing daily life. It depicts a surreal and dreamy mood, watching the world in slow motion as if in a trance.
