James Mackinnon, the grandson of the highly regarded painter and teacher Hugh Mackinnon, was born in London, England in April 1968, his first exhibition was in 1994, where he collaborated with the photographer Tom Hunter who was awarded the John Kobal Portrait Award.
Since then he has been exhibiting with a number of museums and galleries including the Museum of London, the Paton Gallery, the Millinery Works Gallery and more recently Cosa.
