In November 2006 Jasper Knight chartered a small vessel from Butlers Wharf and embarked on a journey exploring London’s historic river. With the H.M.S. Belfast and Tower Bridge behind him the ferry left the mooring and struggled with the strong tidal currents. He passed Execution Dock and headed towards the Royal Naval College at Greenwich, the Millennium Dome and the Thames Flood Barrier at Woolwich.

The Thames and its tributaries were the ideal place for Knight to gather source material for this, his second London exhibition. He found inspiration amongst the decaying warehouses, crumbling facades of derelict maritime buildings, dilapidated piers and cargo wharfs, ferry landings and the abandoned machinery of a once thriving docklands.

Knight’s labour intensive works are part painting, part constructed sculptural objects, hand crafted from various materials such as perspex, old signs, plywood, and found objects. He purposely explores the relationship and connection between the materials and his subject matter before construction begins and his collected materials have a history of their own that often relates directly to the context of the finished work.

Jasper Knight studied at the Sydney University College of the Arts, where he completed a BA in 1997. In 2003 he completed an MA in painting and drawing. He has been selected as a finalist in the Archibald prize, the Wynne prize, the Mosman art prize, the Blake Prize for Religious Art and the Brett Whiteley Travelling Scholarship.
