"Like an alchemist in the city, Georgia Peskett takes the seemingly commonplace and transforms it into the visionary. Reminiscent of American Master Edward Hopper, Peskett's sun-drenched architectural facades become the compositional back-drop to a fusion of temporal occurrences..." Joe La Placa, Director, Artnet
During a visit to New York in early 2007 Georgia Peskett filled several sketchbooks and took hundreds of photographs of the streets and skylines of America’s most iconic city.
Her new work goes beyond a simple photographic realism to show a deep understanding of the application and manipulation of paint. The infamous yellow New York cab appears in several paintings, passing in front of walls bearing the distinctive graffiti of street artists such as Elbowtoe, Faile and D*Face.
Georgia first began developing her early urban street scenes when she lived in New York in the 1980’s. It was a hugely influential time for her as a young artist, a time when she met Jean-Michel Basquiat on several occasions and witnessed the beginnings of the street art movement.
On her return to London Georgia, inspired by her New York experiences, revisited her former hunting grounds of Notting Hill and East London where she has captured the old Smithfield meat market before it gives way to its inevitable redevelopment.
This new group of mature and confident work illustrates Georgia's passion for painting; a skill often overlooked in the current contemporary art scene.
To accompany the exhibition Georgia has created a small group of mixed media works on paper. These jewel like collages reflect her thoughts, memories & daydreams of her times in New York. You can see these works below along with 'Bowery', the first of her urban scenes from 1986.
Prices for Georgia's work range from £800 - £1,500 for works on paper; £2,000 to £4,500 for oils.
