Gillian Sergeant: Works on Paper
At 7 Ledbury Mews North, W11
*Please note this exhibition includes over 70 works on paper by Gillian - not all of which can be viewed on the website. All available works can be viewed at the gallery from Monday 21st April. Prices from £500 - £1,500*
Born in South Africa, Gillian Sergeant studied painting in Cape Town under Maurice van Essche. She came to England in her early twenties, married and had two children and later continued her studies at the Camden Institute under Charles Gebhard, and Aston Chadwick. She has exhibited in Cape Town and in London, including shows at County Hall and Leighton House.
This is the first exhibition of Gillian's figurative works on paper. Old men in turbans and colourful Mayan weddings are juxtaposed with classical life drawings composed in her studio in London.
Over the course of her life Gillian Sergeant has always sketched and painted anonymous figures which have captured her imagination, throughout her travels. Her subjects range from the turban-clad street vendors of India to the brightly coloured Mayan Brides of South Africa.
The show will also include a small collection of works by Gillian’s daughter Emma Sergeant, known for her exquisite human and equestrian portraits, which she feels have been inspired by Gillian. Emma studied at The Slade, and has exhibited widely throughout the UK including at The National Gallery in London. Her paintings can be found in various major private collections around the world.
There is a catalogue accompanying this exhibition and all available works will be posted on the website shortly.
The exhibition is generously supported by Moet & Chandon.
