Robi Walters & Leanne Wright at The Hospital Club
VINYL RECKONING: Robi Walters & Leanne Wright
We are delighted to present works from the Vinyl Reckoning series at The Hospital Club, Covent Garden through April.
Robi & Leanne met in 1991 and spent the ensuing years working as a team designing album covers for some of London's most talented and respected underground dance labels and music producers including Gilles Peterson, Bebel Gilberto, Innerzone Orchestra (Carl Craig) and Dego (4 Hero). In 2004, they moved back to Leanne's native Canada, to a beautiful rural setting on the shores of the Great Lakes. Inspired by their surroundings, their two children and their absolute need to create, their art began to flourish.
Selecting and smashing beloved pieces from their precious vinyl record collection they began their journey and transformation from designers to artists; breaking through what they refer to as their ‘illusory dream state’ and searching beyond.
The music industry has seen radical changes over the past years with the onslaught of technology - including the MP3 – and has resulted in vinyl records becoming so coveted by diehard junkies that a blasphemous “You can't do that!” is sounded whenever the artists speak of their obliteration of Public Enemy’s It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold us Back… Michael Jackson's Off the Wall … Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On … and other reggae, jazz and soul rarities.
Whilst deeply personal, the pieces in the Vinyl Reckoning series have a mesmerising power and appeal and have gained the artists wide recognition for their innovative and thought-provoking creations such as The First Cut and Breakfast At Tiffany’s.
